A Guide to Cleaning Glass Engravings

Glass engravings are not only valuable possessions but they also boost the aesthetics of a room. Furthermore, some are treasured gifts or commemorative pieces that we hold dear to our hearts. Yet, they are not prone to dust, dirt and spillage that can spoil, damage or compromise their beauty.

A lot of care is required when cleaning these masterpieces. Otherwise you could cause more damage to them with scratches or blemishes. Below are some tips that can help you clean them appropriately.

Use delicate detergent

Preferably, you can use a little dishwasher for cleaning. This gentle detergent should be able to clean out most dirt without damaging or corroding the glass. You can also use a brittle brush to clean out crevices and grooves.

Use ammonia for cloudy glass

Even the most crystal glass can become cloudy as a result of using very strong detergents. Pure ammonia can reverse this so that the glass resumes its crystal look. Care must be taken when using ammonia for cleaning. Do you cleaning in an open space or a well ventilated area. Also, do not mix the ammonia with a vinegar based detergent.

Use paint thinner to remove oil stains

Applying a light layer of thinner along with a window cleaning solution will remove any oil stains on the engraving. In addition, you can restrict people from touching it as this could be the main reason for oil staining.

Use a microfiber cloth for that crystal look after cleaning

Microfiber clothes have a smooth texture that will not scratch the glass when wiping off any excess water. Light circular motions are the most appropriate when wiping off the engraving.

Clean up as fast

The detergent and solutions used for cleaning can leave an unattractive streak on the glass if left to dry off. Clean one piece at a time taking it through the entire cleaning process before taking up another.
